Outside Maxwell’s Bar and Grill, the sky had changed colors again. Now it was back to a shade just a hue too deep to be truly called Carolina Blue, but it was close, and much brighter and prettier than the dull, grey of an hour ago. The few degrees that the temperature had shot up since daybreak still had only nosed the mercury up to just slightly above freezing. It was cold.

At the bar, Lisa and the cop were making small talk.

“I feel bad for all the cats on a day like this, especially the kittens that might not be able to handle the cold.”

Dean Lloyd didn’t give a damn about cats. Or, for that matter, dogs. And when you got right down to it, he would also include people—except a few—into the same category with cats and dogs. He didn’t have much time for emotions if you could believe he had any.

“Any idea what I want from you?”

“Not a damn thing until you give me my C-note.”

Lloyd stared blankly at his drink.

“Shit, what did you expect me to say? My main occupation is getting high and the first lesson a crackhead learns is that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” Lisa smiled. “Don’t take it personal, but getting mine first is the only security I believe in. Just like screwing. If a broad is gonna be satisfied, she had better get her orgasm first before the man does or else she’ll come up short.”

Lloyd scowled. “And you truly felt it necessary to explain it like that?”

“How else would I be sure you would understand, Mr……..You got a name?”

“Lloyd.”

“And now that that’s taken care of, why don’t you go ahead and introduce me to Ben Franklin?”

Now Lloyd smiled. “What if I told you that ol’ Benny boy is kinda shy and doesn’t make it a habit of showing his ass to strangers until he know what they can do for him? What would a smart lady like you say to that?”

“Goodbye.” Lisa stood. “Good-the-fuck-bye.”

Lloyd touched Lisa’s gently on the shoulder. “Sit down, Lisa.” He yelled down the counter. “Bartender, another brew for my pal here, and while you’re at it, a fill ‘em up for me.”

“Thanks,” Lisa offered warmly, “another beer will wet my whistle just fine, but only ol’ Ben will loosen my tongue.”

“For a woman, you sure got balls.” He slapped the bill in Lisa’s hand. “In your other life, what were you?”

“A doctor.” Lisa winked slyly. “Or am I bullshitting?”

Lloyd had no idea.
